Report: Qotbi Named Iran Manager
TEHRAN (FNA)- Reports say that former Persepolis manager Afshin Qotbi
was appointed as Iran national soccer team's head coach.

The decision was made during a late night meeting of Iran Football
Federation (IFF) board members on Saturday, Goal.com reported citing
sources close to the body.
Qotbi is expected to arrive in Tehran on Monday to sign a contract
with the IFF, the sources added. The IFF, however, has yet to
officially announce the appointment, press tv reported.
This is while, hours before the meeting, IFF chairman Ali Kafashian
said that there was still no consensus on the next person to sit on the
bench, while the other candidates included Esteqlal manager Amir
Ghalehnoyee, Fajr Sepasi boss Qolam Hossein Peyrovani, Saipa manager
Mohammad Mayelikohan and French coach Philippe Troussier.
"The federation has no plans to appoint a manager within the next
20 days as such a decision requires a thorough study," Kafashian was
quoted by the IFF official website as saying earlier on Saturday.
Announcing Qotbi as a candidate for the job, the IFF chairman had
earlier said that the former Persepolis manager was not requesting any
payments to lead Iran in its three remaining games in the 2010 FIFA
World Cup qualifiers.
Iran's former manager Ali Daei was sacked after his side suffered a
2-1 defeat against Saudi Arabia at Tehran's Azadi Stadium last week and
his assistant Erich Rutemoller temporarily took over. The German led
Iran to a 1-1 draw against Senegal.
Among Iran's three remaining qualifiers are two away games against
South and North Korea which are placed first and second respectively in
Group B of the World Cup qualifiers.
